Hurricane Helene struck Florida’s Panhandle as a devastating Category 4 storm, bringing deadly flooding, winds and storm surge to communities across the region.
Thousands of people sought refuge in Red Cross and partner evacuation shelters to escape the storm overnight, and that number is expected to grow as we learn more about Helene’s destruction.
Right now, our top priority is to offer comfort, shelter, food, spiritual care, and support to those affected by this historic storm and the uncertainties it brings.
This is the third hurricane of the year for the Florida Panhandle. Experts say Helene’s strength was fueled by hotter-than-average ocean temperatures due to the climate crisis.
